Warning Spoilers Ahead For Up To Chapter 148!

Why The Fire Burns

During one of Barbara's outbursts of emotion Kate tries to reach her hand out to Barbara like Maryrose once did long ago, however she slaps her hand away telling Barbie “send them out”. Instead, Barbie disobeys giving us the reason why she’s been so harsh towards Emilyko this whole time. “Just looking at you pisses me off!”. Barbie flies insult after insult at Emilyko taking out all of her anger at once before just about breaking down into tears. “…It’s almost as if. You’re exactly like how I used to be…” this is the reason why Barbie doesn’t like Emilyko.

Barbie’s past used to be hopeful, and bright. The past can be hard to come to terms with, especially for Barbie. Looking at Emilyko for her is like looking into a mirror, and seeing a younger self you hate and despise, or miss with all your heart. She says to Emilyko “why won’t you break?” Asking why won’t she (a constant reminder of what she wants to forget) go away and disappear. She says “I can’t portray the strong face that Miss Barbara wanted.” But she is already standing strong behind her shattered heart, just not in the way she wants. “If the wound on my face can’t heal, then we can’t become adults.” She blames herself for all of Barbara’s pain. And in turn, she takes her pain out on the other living dolls which she rules with an Iron fist. “All I can do is be a tyrant.” not the strong leader she dreams of being, much like Christopher was. And it all sets a fire ablaze deep inside of her. “Dam it pisses me off.”

Final Thoughts

Personally the latest two chapters are really exciting. I’m beyond relieved that Gilbert got spared, and love the turn of events for Barbara and Barbie!  I can’t wait to see where things go in the next few chapters.
